Side view of the 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
Mercedes-Benz must be running out of things to protect because now it is targeting our ears. This isn’t a bad thing, of course, because our ears are sensitive. This has nothing to do with sticks or stones, so don’t worry. We wouldn’t do that. It does have everything to do with the fact that car accidents are unexpectedly loud and can be damaging to our ears. The 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Pre-Safe Sound uses science and a muscle in the ear to protect from permanent damage. It is because of technologies like this that the 2017 E-Class is going to have more differences from the 2016 E-Class than the GLC has from the GLK.
If you’ve ever been in a car accident, you know it’s like someone firing a gun near your ear when you are sleeping. It makes your ears ring and is just an overall unpleasant experience. Well the scientists at Mercedes-Benz figured out that our ears work much like our eyes. If something is too bright, our eyes adjust to let less light in. Likewise, if something is too loud, our ears will adjust to let less sound in. This is natural reflex that occurs in a muscle known as the stapedius. When this muscle contracts, it softens the blow of loud noises.
Now for the fun part; Biomechanical ear protection. When the Mercedes-Benz Pre-safe system, the same system that runs brake assist and impulse side, detects a crash, it will emit a short interference signal that actually triggers the stapedius to contract. This clever technology reduces the risk of damage and discomfort to the inner ear.
So now the next time someone asks you if you can wiggle your ears, you will have something to say. The 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class with Pre-Safe Sound will not be completed until spring of next year, so we have some waiting to do. The 2016 E-Class did however just arrive at dealerships so stop in at Mercedes-Benz of Arrowhead for a test drive.
