If you’ve seen any of the videos of the new 2018 Mercedes-AMG GT R at Goodwood Festival of Speed or otherwise, you are probably wondering the same thing we were. Is this really a street car? From the color, to the sound, to the AMG traction control, the GT R gives off race car vibes through and through. In fact, it sounds like it is too loud to even drive on the street without getting pulled over. Then we learned the truth and it is called Mercedes-AMG GT R comfort mode.
Like all Mercedes-Benz vehicles, the GT R comes with five DYNAMIC SELECT Driving Modes. DYNAMIC SELECT is an electronic means of controlling the way the car cars from shifting speed to differential slip variation to ride height. Actually, the system basically turns every Mercedes-Benz into five different cars, but we’ll get to that later. The modes differ between street and off-road vehicles, but every vehicle has five.
On the GT R, you will find C, S, S+, I, and R. Respectively, these stand for Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Individual, and Race. The GT R we are seeing online and at the Goodwood Festival of Speed was obviously in R, giving it that monstrous roar and precision. For the street though, the GT R holds on to the Comfort mode. Comfort mode closes the exhaust slightly to muffle the sound and doesn’t let the engine rev as high, among many other functions, to make the car drivable in the city.
We are still a little skeptical as to whether the GT R will be “comfortable” on the street, but based on the Mercedes-AMG S65 and the Mercedes-AMG G65, we are willing to trust Mercedes-AMG.
