Use Your Senses To Determine Whether or Not Your Brakes Need Replacing

  • Look
    • This may be the most obvious tip, but it still counts. If you see the brake warning light on, don’t ignore it. The longer you wait, the more you risk more expensive damage.
  • Listen
    • Everyone knows the sound of screeching brakes. The loud, high-pitched squeal is like nails on the chalkboard. You may also hear a grinding sound. This takes place when the disc and the caliper rub together. Letting this go will end up causing further rotor damage. So, if you hear screeching or grinding every time you come to a red light, there’s a good chance your brakes should be replaced.
  • Feel
    • You may recently noticed your car drifting to the left or right as you use your brakes. Or maybe you feel some extra vibrations as you slow to a stop. Get in to get your brakes looked at as soon as possible. This could be a result of uneven brake pads or uneven calipers. Vibration can be caused by warped rotors. The faster you get this checked out, the less damage you’ll do in the long run.
  • Smell
    • Strange, burning smells coming from your tires while braking is a great sign that something needs to be checked out.
