Water is tricky. It exists in many different physical states and it can find its way into just about anywhere. How does it get there? You may be relieved to hear that it is probably not your fault. Actually, it is more likely that it happened at the gas station. When the weather is hot and humid, water can sneak into the underground fuel tanks through saturation. Obviously this happens over a long period of time, but gas stations that fail to get this checked will undoubtedly run into this problem at some point. Even in cold weather, the freezing and thawing of snow and ice can cause contamination.
The other way water can get into your fuel tank, filters, or lines is if the diesel fuel has been sitting for a long time in the vehicles fuel tank. This is less likely, but has been known to happen with diesel engines.

Diesel fuel is more susceptible to water than gasoline, but that doesn’t mean gasoline engines are immune to this problem. Put simply, water can break up diesel fuel in less time than it takes gasoline to break down. Once this happens, mildew and mold can literally start growing in your gas tank.
This varies from state to state, but many fuel stations are allowed to use a certain percentage of biodiesel fuel without putting any kind of indication on the fuel pump at the fueling station. Biodiesel fuel already has water in it, which is used to reduce emissions, but it is not as good for your car as regular diesel fuel. This makes it important to know that you are getting your diesel fuel from a trusted source.
