How to get rid of and repair rust spots on your vehicle

Rust spots can be an annoyance to look at. But, this annoyance can quickly turn into a more serious problem if left alone. So, here’s how to get rid of rust spots on your vehicle. Need to repair the body on your vehicle? Here’s where you can do so.

DIY rust spot repair on cars

First off, you’ll need to take proper safety precautions. That means gloves, safety goggles, and a mask. Why? Because you are basically going to be sanding your car, only instead of sawdust, it will be fine particles of metal flying in the air.

You may want to cover the parts of your car you aren’t going to be working on or be prepared to carefully clean it off after. Use a sander to sand the paint and loose rust from the spot you are going to fix. Then, switch to a grinder to grind away the rust on your vehicle. After that, remove the loose rust particles with phosphoric acid, which you can find at an auto shop.

Now that the rust is gone, it is time to paint the spot over. First, clean the area with paint thinner, then use a metal primer. Apply 2 or 3 coats of primer. Enough to thoroughly cover the spot, but not enough to have the primer dripping off the metal. Follow the instructions on the primer. Usually, you’ll need to let it dry for about 12 hours. So, this isn’t a single-day endeavor.

Find your paint and 400-grit sandpaper. Smooth the area over but make sure you have water on hand to regularly rinse the sandpaper. Then, paint the area, following the instructions on the can. Usually, you’ll have to wait a day to let the paint dry. The last step is to buff it so that the new paint blends better with the old.
