Is it Illegal to Ride Your Bike on the Sidewalk in Arizona?

To put it as simply as possible, no, but also yes. The state of Arizona does not have a law against bicyclists riding their bikes on sidewalks with other pedestrians. However, the state does allow each city to determine their specific bike laws. It could be legal in the state, but still illegal in the city you are riding in. This being said, it is important to know the laws before biking in a new area.

Not knowing the bike laws in an area could not only cause danger to you but also pedestrians and motorists around you. With the weather warming up, more people are likely to be out and about so be sure to do your research and know the bike laws in your area.

Where Should You Ride Your Bike?

This is a great question, but unfortunately, there is not one straight-forward answer. Each city area in Arizona creates their own list of specific bike laws that all bicyclists are required to follow. If the city does not have any specific laws regarding bicyclists to stay off the sidewalk, then it depends on the preference of the bicyclist. In Phoenix, for example, bicyclists are legally allowed to ride on the sidewalks.

Although it may be legal, it does not mean that it is necessarily safer. The majority of bike accidents happen when the bicyclist is riding on the sidewalk or in a crosswalk. Although it may not always seem like it, it is safer for bicyclists to be on the roadways with the other motorists.

When riding on the roadways, bicyclists are required to follow all the same signs and street laws as motorists do including yielding to pedestrians at crosswalks and sidewalks.

Tips for Safe Bike Riding

Not everything is in your control, but it is important to pay attention and do what you can to stay safe on the road. Here are some tips to keep in mind before heading out for a bike ride:

  • Ride on the right side with the flow of traffic
