Is the Mercedes G-Class really an off-road vehicle?
In Peoria, AZ, we here at Mercedes-Benz of Arrowhead are surrounded by what you might call “off-road.” Drive a few miles down Highway 60 or I-10 and you’ll find yourself smack in the middle of the desert. Which, for some, might seem a strange place to find a Mercedes-Benz. But you’ll be quite likely to find one model in particular out there: the G-Class.
But is the Mercedes-Benz G-Class really a tried-and-true off-roader? Yes. Let us prove it.
The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has been around for over 40 years. Like the popular Jeep Wrangler, the G-Class was developed for military purposes and then adapted to the civilian market. The first model appeared 1979 and was tested on a particularly difficult off-road proving ground in Toulon, France. The G-Class received numerous updates and refinements over the years, until it eventually landed on the W463 platform in 1990. The W463 is iconic in its design, with the first generation of W463 models ranging from 1990 to 2018. In 2019, the second generation of W463 debuted, to much success and critical acclaim. It retained the signature look and feel of the first-generation W463, all while improving upon it in virtually every way.
The 2021 G-Class features 4WD, three lockable differentials, and boasts some of the best climbing and fording depths measurements on the market. It also has an independent double-wishbone suspensions, a rigid rear axle, electric power steering, and a multimode suspension with adjustable dampening.
