Supplies you will need

Unfortunately, you can’t change a flat tire without the necessary tools. There are a lot of useful tools that we recommend keeping in your vehicle for an occasion where you will need to switch out a tire. It may never happen, but it is better to come prepared. The items we recommend are as follows:

  • Jack
  • Lug Wrench
  • Flashlight with batteries
  • Wheel wedges

Of course, it isn’t a bad idea to keep some all-weather gear in your vehicle, because you don’t know what the weather will be like when you are changing the tire. Also, it goes without saying, but we will say it anyway, you can’t change a flat tire unless you have a workable spare tire in your vehicle. Make sure your spare tire is always inflated correctly.

How to change a flat tire in your car

If you are not already parked when you realize that you have a flat tire, the first thing to do is to pull off to the side of the road. If you can do so, turn on your hazard lights when you do this, but do not take your hands off the wheel if you will lose control of the vehicle. With a flat tire, it is important to remember to slow down gradually. Do not brake or turn abruptly. Pull off to the side of the road slowly and stop in a place with level ground if you can.

Next, apply your parking brake and put your wheel wedges under the wheels of the non-flat tires. Then remove the hubcap or wheel cover. You can use your lug wrench to do this. Your vehicle manual should have specific instructions on how to do this. Then use the lug wrench to turn the lug nuts counterclockwise until they are loose.

Now, raise your vehicle using the jack and remove the lug nuts and flat tire completely. After that it is time to put the spare tire on. Put it over the lug bolts and tighten the lug nuts back onto the spare and replace the hubcap. Then you should be good to go. Drive cautiously and replace the spare as soon as possible.
