Daimler to Change Climate Control For the Better in 2017

Mercedes-Benz C02 Air Conditioner

Just out of the spotlight of the Volkswagen scandal, sits Mercedes-Benz. Considered by some to be the father of German engineering, it is affected by the uproar, although not nearly as much as VW, who will be digging itself out of a hole for a long time. To take advantage of the situation, as well as to comply with 2017 emissions laws in Europe, Mercedes-Benz has developed a new, efficient, clean, and cool way to control the climate in your car. It’s Carbon Dioxide! The Mercedes-Benz CO2 Air Conditioner is not only better for the environment, but it is also more powerful than the standard air conditioner of today, even in the S-Class.

The CO2 air conditioner blows the traditional air conditioner out of the water. It operates in the ballpark of ten times more pressure and, as a result, needs upgraded components to handle the pressure. This means special hoses and seals need to be fabricated. The air-conditioning system is still in testing stages, as it has different flammability properties than the air conditioners in our cars. To ensure that it complies with European safety laws, it will feature a protective system that will separate the refrigerated air is separated from hot engine systems in the event of a collision. That seems a little sketchy right now, but we trust Mercedes-Benz when it says it knows what it is doing.

Although the technology is brand new, Mercedes-Benz sees the potential of the CO2 air conditioner. Because of this, the manufacturer is putting it into production as soon as it is ready. This is exciting because it will probably be in North American models by 2018 or 2019. Regardless of how long it takes, we will definitely see this technology coming across the pond very soon.
