If you are thinking about joining the cool club of Mercedes-Benz owners, you have probably noticed the heavy use of biturbo engines in Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG vehicles. Mercedes-Benz doesn’t do a very good job of explaining the significance of this, but it is actually some of the best technology available right now to make an engine more powerful and more efficient. Let’s take a closer look at twin turbo turbo engines vs biturbo engines to better appreciate all that Mercedes-Benz does for us.

Whether you drive a 2016 Mercedes-Benz CLA or a 2016 Mercedes-AMG GT S, your car sucks air in through the front and pushes air out the back. This air gets compressed and ignited inside the cylinders to keep the process going over and over and over again. A turbocharger is a form of forced induction that sucks more air through the exhaust than the engine could on its own. A twin-turbo system does the same thing but with two turbochargers in place of the one.
Although there are a couple variations of this, the most common type is a sequential twin-turbo system. In this application, the two turbos are different sizes and work independently. At low RPMs, the smaller turbo will spool until enough pressure is going through to spool the larger turbo.
Mercedes-Benz biturbo engines use two identical turbochargers, one on each side of the manifold, to suck as much as 20 PSI through the engine. Each turbocharger is connected to the three cylinders on its respective side of the engine and they work together to create boost faster and more efficiently. Biturbo systems are less stressful for engines and they get better gas mileage.
Having said all that, the difference in performance is virtually unnoticeable. Even on a diagnostic readout, you would have to look closely to see the difference in torque at different RPMs. The real advantage you get with Mercedes-Benz biturbo is the strength and reliability that comes with it.
