Is Tesla In Trouble?

Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 VS Tesla Model S

Mercedes-Benz wants to be the leader in automotive luxury on every platform. Although it currently stands tall at the top of the combustion engine market for both diesel and gasoline engines, there is one market that the German powerhouse has yet to be able to saturate. Especially in America, the number of electric Mercedes-Benz vehicles is extremely limited.

The truth is that the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and the Tesla Model S are very similar cars. The problem with the S-Class, is that it isn’t available in all-electric form in the United States, giving the Tesla a weight advantage. The introduction of the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6, however, could be the beginning of a new generation of electric cars.

Power

In the power category, you know Mercedes-Benz wouldn’t release such a car without being able to one-up the current leader. The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 features the equivalent of 738 horsepower. The Tesla P90D comes with 532 horsepower.

Acceleration

Thanks to Ludicrous mode, the Tesla model is faster than the Mercedes-AMG GT R and the 911 GT3. Because of the large size of the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6, it will accelerate much slower than the Tesla Model S.

Range

Again, we have to give the range category to Tesla, which will travel about 70 more miles than the Mercedes-Maybach prototype. It is important to remember that the Mercedes-Maybach is a concept car that will change immensely before ever making it to production.

Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 VS Tesla Model S P90D
738 SAE Horsepower Power 532 SAE Horsepower
0-60 Acceleration 0-60 = 2.8 Seconds
200 Miles Range 270 Miles

Of course, the Mercedes-Maybach features interior luxury closer to the Mercedes-Maybach Pullman S-Class, where the Tesla looks more like a regular S-Class. This is where much of the popularity of the Mercedes-Maybach 6 would come from, if it were to go into production some day. For now though, we have to focus on performance but Mercedes-Benz is definitely headed in the right direction.
