If the water pump in your car isn’t working, it’s best to stop driving immediately. This is the main way your car engine keeps cool. If you continue to drive, the engine will not only overheat, but you run the risk of irreversibly damaging your engine.
Normally, you’d want to replace the water pump in your car around every 100,000 miles. However, this is just a general estimation. Many customers choose to live life on the wild side and not replace the pump after 100,000 miles. While this can delay the cost of replacing the pump, it also runs the risk of having the pump go while you’re driving. As we’ve said before, this will cause the engine to rapidly heat, and depending on where you are, you might be faced with a large towing bill.
So don’t panic if you haven’t replaced the water pump in your car. Check your maintenance records, see what mileage your car has on it, and go from there. You probably have enough time to save up to replace your water pump, so take your time and get that money ready. However, if you think your water pump is dying then it’s time to book an appointment with your mechanic.
