Something You Didn’t Know About The 2017 Mercedes-AMG GT

What Is Mercedes-Benz Magnetorheological Fluid?

Mercedes-Benz uses a lot of unique materials and methods to build its cars. Both on the inside and the outside, a Mercedes-Benz will astound drivers even after years of ownership. This is especially true with the 2017 Mercedes-AMG GT. Did you know it uses magnetorheological fluid to increase stability and comfort? What the heck is magnetorheological fluid?
GT R Traction Control Modes Explained
As a basic definition, magnetorheological fluid is a synthetic fluid that changes viscosity in the presence of magnetic force. Sounds like something out of Batman, right? That’s because it is. It is what they use to refuel jets mid-flight and it is the same technology used in liquid body armor.

Mercedes-AMG GT

In the Mercedes-AMG GT, you will find the magnetorheological fluid within the powertrain/chassis coupling. This means it connects the parts that move the car such as the engine, driveshaft, and differentials to the frame of the car As the center of gravity on the car changes with varying velocities, the magnetorheological fluid will become more viscous in spots where more strength is needed. It also makes the car more comfortable when driving slowly because the car is simply more flexible.

Electromagnets

To manipulate the fluid to do exactly what is needed, the powertrain/chassis coupling mounts are surrounded by electromagnets. They send electric currents throughout the system to create a magnetic force, just like the force that acts on the Earth via its molten iron inner core. Actually, all Mercedes-Benz cars use magnets in some way shape or form, but this is the coolest and most unknown application.

Foreign Object Magnets

What happens if you park next to a giant magnet? Exactly what you think would happen. It could cause your powertrain/chassis couplings to stiffen unevenly. This is of no cause for concern, however, because as soon as you drove away from it or turned the car on, the system would return to normal. Still fun to think about, though.
