Why Does Mercedes-Benz Recommend Synthetic Oil Instead of Conventional Oil?

When your vehicle needs an oil change depends on a lot of variables including how often you drive and the type of driving you do. You can check the recommended mileage between oil changes in your owner’s manual, or contact our knowledgeable team. Most Mercedes-Benz models built since 2010 will only require an oil change every 10,000 miles or once a year. You may have noticed your Mercedes-Benz recommends using synthetic motor oil rather than conventional motor oil. But why? Let’s take a closer look at the benefits of synthetic oil and whether or not it’s worth the extra money.

Differences Between Synthetic Oil and Conventional Oil

You know that synthetic oil is more expensive and more-often recommended than conventional motor oil. But why? Conventional oil is refined from crude oil with a variety of additives that alter the viscosity. Viscosity refers to the way the oil flows, meaning conventional oil will have temperatures in which it works and flows better. Conventional oil additives also help to clean the engine and reduce friction. Synthetic oil is also refined oil, however, the process is more involved and advanced, meaning synthetic oil flows better at all temperatures and contains fewer contaminants that result in engine sludge.

Benefits of Synthetic Oil

While there are many benefits of synthetic oil, perhaps the best is the fact synthetic oil lasts longer than conventional oil. With a high-quality synthetic oil, you won’t need to change your oil as frequently, saving you time and money. Synthetic motor oil also positively affects performance. Synthetic oil will work better and flow faster at extreme summer and winter temperatures and can boost horsepower more than conventional oils. Overall, synthetic oil is just better at lubricating and cleaning your engine, resulting in a cleaner and longer-lasting engine. You’ll save money in the long run with a little bit more of an investment while changing the oil.
