The newly redesigned Mercedes-Benz E-Class introduces an innovative driver-facing camera that adds a whole new layer of functionality to your drive. Unlike traditional driver-assist technologies, this camera actively monitors the driver’s attention level, facial direction, and even eye movement. By doing so, it works with the vehicle’s onboard systems to provide alerts or trigger actions when distraction or fatigue is detected. 

For instance, if the camera senses that the driver’s eyes have been off the road for too long, a warning may appear on the dashboard, helping the driver refocus. It’s also designed to detect signs of drowsiness—prompting helpful alerts if it believes a break might be needed. These features are part of a larger suite called Attention Assist, which is backed by artificial intelligence to adapt based on real-world driving behavior.

But the camera does more than just monitor attention—it also personalizes your driving experience. When paired with the optional MBUX Superscreen and new third-party app capabilities, the driver camera adds gesture control into the mix. The E-Class recognizes simple hand gestures, such as swiping or pointing, to interact with media or navigation settings. This lets you make quick adjustments without reaching for physical buttons, which can help you keep your focus on the road.

Additionally, the driver camera supports safety features like Driver Monitoring in Assisted Driving Mode. When using Mercedes-Benz’s advanced driver assistance systems, the camera keeps track of whether you’re alert enough to take over if needed. This level of attention tracking is especially important during adaptive cruise control or lane-keeping scenarios, where the vehicle offers support but still needs the driver’s involvement.
