Effects of Hot Temperatures on Tires
Excessive heat can cause wear and damage to your tires, and driving on damaged tires can be dangerous. Excessive heat wears tires quicker than normal and exacerbates any pre-existing damage.
The heat really does a number on your tires. When the temperature change, your tire pressure changes, as well. For every 10-degree increase in air temperature, your tire pressure increases by 1 PSI. In hot, sunny weather, the PSI of your tires can increase by as much as 5 PSI within the first 20 minutes of driving.
One of the most common heat-related problems associated with your tires is dry-rot. Dry-rot, also known as sidewall cracking, occurs when the oils of your tire’s rubber begin to evaporate. This leads to a dry tire that is very susceptible to cracking and, ultimately, blowouts.
